After Carlton read out Matthew Kreuzer’s name at pick No. 1 and Richmond followed with Trent Cotchin at the next pick, St Kilda unearthed a hidden gem down the order at pick No. 42 in the 2007 National Draft. His name is Jack Steven.

With St Kilda’s midfield stacked full of established stars like Lenny Hayes, Brendon Goddard and Nick Dal Santo, it took a while for the Geelong Falcons product to earn a game during the Grand Final era. But after biding his time he earned a debut late in his second season down in Launceston in Round 19, 2009.

After playing nine games in his first three years, Steven cemented a spot in Ross Lyon’s side in 2011, playing 21 games including the elimination final loss to Sydney, which remains his one and only finals appearance thus far.

Steven played his 50th game against Greater Western Sydney in the penultimate round of 2012 in a game where the Saints trounced the Giants by 128 points at Etihad Stadium. The emerging star played 21 games again in 2012 and finished inside the top 10 of the Trevor Barker Award for the first time in his career.

2013 was the year Steven announced himself. The speedster played every game in his best season to date, winning his first Trevor Barker Award as well as being named in the All-Australian squad for the first time. After never previously accumulating 30 disposals, Steven did so on six occasions including a haul of 47 in the final round of the year against Fremantle that still stands as the most he has ever collected.

2015 was a massive year for the boy from Lorne. He started the year by inking a five-year contract extension in March, tying him to St Kilda until the end of 2020. By the end of the year, the game breaking onballer had won his second best and fairest, holding off another star midfielder in David Armitage in a thrilling count.

September 1, 2016

In the 142 year history of St Kilda Football Club, only nine players had ever won the best and fairest on three occasions before 2016. By the end of the season, Steven wove his name into the Saints’ tapestry, becoming just the tenth player to win three Trevor Barker Awards. The then 26-year-old was named as a leader for the first time and also included in the All-Australian squad for the second time, after playing all 22 games and averaging career-highs for disposals (28.0), contested possessions (11.3) and clearances (5.5) in another spectacular season.

Given what Steven has achieved in the last four years, it’s hard to believe it took him a little bit of time to cement a spot in St Kilda’s engine room. After missing two games earlier in the year due to a punctured lung, and losing his flowing mullet in the early stages of winter, Steven reaches the 150th game milestone against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval this Saturday, earning life membership in the process.
