St Kilda key forward Tim Membrey followed up his breakout 2016 with another impressive season in 2017, kicking the most goals at Linen House Centre for the second successive season.

While he didn’t quite have as many standout games like last year, the 23-year-old was more consistent this year, particularly in the back half of the year where he booted 23 goals in his last nine games.

In a year where the Saints were plagued by poor goalkicking, Membrey was one of only a few to capitalise on his opportunities in front of goal, finishing with 38.14 from 20 games.

Unlike last year where he burst out of the blocks, the former Swan took a little bit of time to get going this season. But after the bye, Membrey finished the season off with a full head of steam.

The mobile spearhead kicked multiple goals on 13 occasions in 2017, including an equal personal best haul of five against Richmond in Round 16, in the same game where he received a two-week suspension for striking Dylan Grimes.

After kicking nine goals in his first year at the Saints in 2015, Membrey has now booted 82 goals in the last two seasons to establish himself as a critical component of St Kilda’s attack.

Performance of the year:

Round 16 v Richmond at Etihad Stadium: 11 disposals, nine marks, five marks inside 50, five contested marks and five goals.

Alan Richardson's views:

“Tim had another impressive year where he continued to grow and build his game as a player,” Richardson said.

“He started the year well and had a big second half of the season, particularly in the last 10 games where he impacted the scoreboard.

“Not unlike our team, Tim faced some challenges through the middle section of the year, but he fought through them which was impressive.

“At one stage he was rated as the best one-on-one contest forward in the game, which is quite special.

“If he doesn’t win the ball in the air he generally recovers really quickly which is so important.

“In a year where we struggled to convert our chances, Tim continued to be a reliable goalkicker.

“We look forward to seeing his continued development and growth next season.”
