Sandringham Senior Coach and St Kilda Specialist Coach Aaron Hamill has his say on the Saints’ best performers in the VFL.

Brandon White 25 kicks, eight handballs, five marks, 12 rebound 50s

Brandon was outstanding again for us for the second week in a row. Since he’s come back to VFL level, he’s averaged 30-odd possessions. He’s very good in contest, offensively he gives us a fair bit of drive and grunt off the back there, and defensively he’s winning his one-on-ones.

Ben Paton Seven kicks, 12 handballs, four marks, six tackles

Ben’s really good in tight, he has the capacity to win his own ball, capacity to use his legs out of stoppage and he gets going for us offensively. He’s got all the key ingredients to become a really consistent player for us, every week he’s adding different layers. He’s coming together nicely but we need to keep building his game.

VFL: Match Report Round 7

Oscar Clavarino Eight kicks, eight handballs, four marks, three tackles

Oscar is learning his craft, and against really good quality opposition. We’ve played four out of the top five sides, so all that experience means the younger guys are getting a good test and we expect significant growth.

Darragh Joyce Nine kicks, eight handballs, six marks, four tackles

Darragh had one of his better games, he’s strung a fair few together now. He likes to assist in the air and he’s competent on the deck. He’s probably been one of our more consistent performers, and in terms of growth, he’s shown significant signs of improvement.

Rice follows in father's footsteps

Darren Minchington 10 kicks, five handballs, one mark, one tackle

‘Meatball’ was consistent for us for his 60 minutes. He’s an experienced player, he’s worked exceptionally hard in the time he’s had off and we needed him to hit the ground running and have an influence for us, which he did around stoppage, so we expect him to be more dynamic next week after a run.

Hugh Goddard (1.0) Six kicks, one handball, four marks, one tackle

Hugh’s a really competitive bloke and he gives us a really good contest back or front. He’s got a lot to learn about his forward craft, but he absorbs anything you throw at him, so he’s keen to learn and he provides elite contest up there.

VFLW: Southern Saints march on

Nathan Freeman (AC joint)

Nathan’s clearly disappointed and frustrated with the injury, but he’s met with the surgeon and our medical department and high-performance unit, and he’s got a clear plan of how it’s going to unfold over the next four-five weeks.

In typical ‘Freeza’ spirit, he came off the ground and had an influence on the bench and had an influence at half-time. He’s a quality individual, so we wish him all the best with it and we’ll support him where we can, and we look forward to getting him back out there.
