St Kilda’s General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean yesterday confirmed Jack Steven’s future lies at the Saints.

After taking out the club’s highest honour on Wednesday night, Steven himself stated in no uncertain terms that he would be at St Kilda in 2019.

“I’m contracted and very happy…I don’t really see how it could change,” he said.

Lethlean then backed up the star midfielder’s comments on the Dare Drink it Through Podcast on Monday afternoon.

“We’ve spoken to Jack all the way across the year and he’s always confirmed that he’s content where he is,” he said.

“He’s not content [with] where we’re at though, and he wants to know how we’re going to get better and how he can help.

“So, it was a pretty mature discussion in his exit interview, he was well-prepared to have the conversation he wanted to have, so that’s to be encouraged.

“We’re after a football program and environment that challenges to improve all the time, so I thought he asked really mature questions that a four-time best-and-fairest winner should be asking about where we’re at and how we’re going to get better.

“He’s a Lorne boy, and if Geelong aren’t checking in in some respect through his management or through him, they’re not doing their job.”

On Steven drawing level with Robert Harvey and Bill Cubbins on best-and-fairests won, Lethlean was quick to emphasise the enormity of the 28-year-old’s accomplishment.

“It’s pretty impressive to have that sort of resume now at his age…that puts him in pretty rare company,” Lethlean said.

“You win a best-and-fairest at any level and you’ve had a big impact, so to do it at an AFL club four times is huge; let’s not downplay that, it’s a massive effort.

“He’s a culturally significant person at the club now and for our fans – everyone loves Jack – and his output again this year was extremely solid, and he should be congratulated.

“He had a good night and a big smile on his face, and we’re looking forward to him bringing that energy back in the middle of November when they all come back.”
