St Kilda’s fortunate run with injuries has come to a screeching halt with a handful of injuries infiltrating the club across the weekend.

Key defender Sam Fisher (hamstring), ruckman Billy Longer (concussion) and midfielder Nathan Freeman (hamstring) were all ruled out before St Kilda boarded their flight to Adelaide on Saturday morning.

And by the time the Saints landed back in Melbourne on Sunday night, Nick Riewoldt (knee), Hugh Goddard (Achilles), Paddy McCartin (concussion), Sean Dempster (knee) and Daniel McKenzie (illness) had all joined the Saints list of medical concerns.

Saints GM of Football Performance Jamie Cox lamented the spate of injuries over the weekend, although he did concede the club had been lucky up unto this point of the season from a medical perspective.

“After having such a good start to the season with our injury list we’re a bit banged up this week. We’ve had a number of impact injuries, which means will be missing a few for selection this week,” Cox told saints.com.au on Tuesday night.

After delving into the injuries that emerged from Sunday’s loss to Adelaide in a press conference on Tuesday morning, Cox shed further light on Longer’s recovery from a concussion he experienced in a VFL game last month.

“It goes back a bit further for Bill. He got a knock in the VFL game against Collingwood three or four weeks ago and recovered well and played subsequently,” Cox said.

“But he got another knock, not to the head, but got jarred through a bump during the week at training and complained of some headaches afterwards and presented with some delayed concussion symptoms.

“He went and saw the neuropsych who said the best method for Bill is to have three or four weeks off and really give himself a chance to settle.”

Cox indicated that dual Trevor Barker Award winner Fisher is set to miss the next month after he strained his hamstring last Thursday.

“Last Thursday at training Sam suffered a hamstring injury,” Cox said.

“It was a little bit similar to what he has suffered previously and will need at least four weeks to recover from that. So just a regulation hamstring for Sam, which frustratingly means four weeks out for him.”
