ST KILDA is highly likely to regain Shane Savage and Luke Dunstan this week, while Paddy McCartin will also be available for selection after missing round 20 with soreness.

Savage (hip) was sidelined last week and Luke Dunstan (calf), trained fully on Tuesday.

“Shane Savage and Luke Dunstan will both hopefully be back this week from their respective injuries,” head physio Andrew Wallis told SAINTS.com.au.

“Luke had a bit of a calf injury but he trained fully today. Shane had a hip pointer and he certainly trained well today also.

“We expect them to get through training on Thursday and be available for selection.”

ROUND 21: Saints Premier Lounge

Unfortunately the news is not so good for Sean Dempster, whose unbroken run of 59 games has come to an end due to a broken nose sustained when he ran back with the flight of the ball on Saturday against North Melbourne.

Dempster played out the match and is expected to return in time to face his former team, Sydney, in round 22.

From a VFL perspective, Sandringham enjoyed a good win despite spending the entire second half with just two fit men on the bench.

The Zebras lost Brenton Payne (ankle) in the opening minutes of the contest, while Eli Templeton went down with a hamstring injury shortly after.

“Eli has a lower grade injury so he should miss just the two weeks,” Wallis said.

“Brenton had a high ankle sprain so unfortunately that sees him in a boot for the next 3-4 weeks. It will probably rule him out for the rest of the year.”

First-year players Daniel McKenzie and Jack Lonie are considered week-by-week propositions, although Wallis was confident the latter would be available for selection ahead of round 22.

“Jack Lonie with that knock on the top of the leg is still one week away,” he said.

“He did some running today but we want him to run further over the rest of this week and then hopefully be available for selection for Sydney.”

UPDATED: Round 21 injury list

As for McKenzie, his second head knock for the season has resulted in St Kilda’s medical staff undertaking a cautious approach.

“Daniel still has to pass his concussion test so he may be 1-2 weeks away,” Wallis said.

Meanwhile, Tom Curren is considered a realistic chance to return towards the back end of Sandringham’s finals campaign – should the Zebras make it there.

He remains on the long-term injury list, alongside Tom Lee, who had surgery on Monday.

“Tommy Curren is getting a lot closer. He is only 5-6 weeks away so we are hoping for the VFL preliminary final with Sandringham,” Wallis said.

“We expect Tom Lee to be right to go by the start of pre-season after his surgery last night.”
