Jonathon Marsh, Matty Parker and Daniel McKenzie have sustained their press for a senior berth following Friday’s modified scratch match against Melbourne.

The Saints and Demons – along with a smattering of North Melbourne players – took part in the 12v12 outing, which was played across 20-minute thirds with short breaks to mirror the high-intensity running at AFL level.

All three played inside and through the midfield, with both providing damaging bursts at the stoppages and utilising their speed and strength in the contest.

McKenzie also added to his statement with an impressive grab, while Parker hit the scoreboard and helped set up several others through his pressure in the front half.

His explosiveness around the contest really stood out, especially with limited numbers he had a lot of space to work into.

Development Manager Ben McGlynn said the heavily amended hit-out was important to the prospective Saints in the reserves, who did not see any action last week.

“It’s going to be harder with the shorter breaks coming up, but where we can we want to make sure we get these games in so the boys are getting that match fitness and practice,” McGlynn told saints.com.au.

“It’s less numbers and we brought the wings in so it’s not a full game, but you can’t do this at training – all the work at the contest and the game-like running, it’s pretty important.”

Jack Bell and Leo Connolly continued their development at reserves level, with the latter providing plenty of run behind the footy in his customary half-back position.

Connolly had been played up forward and along the wings in the Saints’ previous scratch matches.

Sam Alabakis took the rucking reins, while Oscar Clavarino, Logan Austin held down the defence as rain set in during the second half.

Doulton Langlands joined Marsh, Parker and McKenzie through the midfield, leaving Darragh Joyce to as a hit-up target in the offensive end.

Dylan Roberton, Jack Lonie, Ryan Byrnes, Ryan Abbott, Jarryn Geary, Seb Ross and Round 11 debutant Jack Bytel did not take part in the match.
