Dan Hannebery and Jack Bytel returned to the VFL in a big way on Saturday afternoon, while Tom Campbell continued his strong form in the impressive win over Coburg.

St Kilda Development and Zebras Assistant Coach Ben Jacobs sat down with saints.com.au to discuss how each AFL-listed player fared in the 28-point win out at Piranha Park.

On the game

It was good to get back onto the winner’s list. It was an incredibly windy day, about a six-goal wind. It was a pretty even game going into the second-half, we got about six goals up by three-quarter time but obviously knowing we’d have to defend well with how strong the wind was. We managed to possess the footy quite a bit and worked well, so to come away with a 28-point win was pleasing.

Jack Bytel

27 disposals, six clearances, six inside-50s

Jack was fantastic on return. He was right back into the swing of things and slotted in well. He got a heap of the footy and was vital for us throughout the game, but especially when we were kicking into the wind. I thought for his first game back, he was superb.

Dan Hannebery

29 disposals, seven inside-50s, four clearances

Hanners was great too. He’s got this different type of intensity, both in how he runs and how he plays, it is good for our VFL lads to see. His leadership was obviously invaluable, and he was important to helping us secure the win. He played his role and pulled up well.

Tom Campbell

45 hitouts, 26 disposals, 14 clearances, six inside-50s, one goal

It was another awesome game for TC, he is so good in the middle. He’s a great leader and has dominated VFL footy for a long time. Saturday was no different, he stood up in crucial moments, gave us first use at the stoppage and booted a massive goal on the three-quarter time siren. I reckon it was over 70 metres and it gave us a lot of momentum heading into the final term.

Jarrod Lienert

21 disposals, five marks

Jarrod was solid, he helped us move the ball well throughout the lines when we got going, but as a collective back-six, we were a bit slow to setup. We just need tidy up some structural stuff going forward, but Jarrod played his role and like the others, worked his way into the game.

Leo Connolly

20 disposals, three inside-50s

Leo is developing each day. He’s so damaging with his leg speed, and it can really help us when he has the ball in hand. There were a few times where he cut through the middle, and it really opened up the ground for us. There are times where he can work on being a bit more accountable for his man, but he knows that and all-in-all, there is a heap to like.

Darragh Joyce

15 disposals

Darragh is so important for us, he holds up our backline and we can count on him to win some crucial one-on-ones. With the breeze too, he helped us tidy up a few times when the ball spilled to ground. Like some of the others, he can probably just work structurally on a couple of things, more as a collective as a back-six than individually, but we know what he brings to the table and he’s a good leader for us down there.

Matthew Allison

10 disposals, five tackles

It was a pretty tough day for forwards in general, it was either going over your head or it was being slammed into the breeze. It was a good learning curve for Matty, his contested work was solid, and he worked hard all day. He’s a young feller who is still developing so experiences like these will only serve him well going forward.

Oscar Adams

Six disposals

It’s good to see Oscar out there. It was only his second game back from injury and he looked strong. He’s so athletic for the position that he plays so as he continues to learn, he’ll keep getting better and start to use those physical attributes to his advantage.

Max Heath

Maxxy copped a bit of a knock early in the game and was subbed off under concussion protocols. He’ll miss this week and we’ll miss him. We love what he’s doing and he’s been lucky enough to work with TC in the ruck. We’ll look forward to getting him back as soon as he’s right to go.

Onto next week: Port Melbourne at Sandringham

Another big game for us. We’re treating every match like a final from here going forward, we need to keep winning. Good to get the four-points this week but we have to keep the momentum up. Port Melbourne are a good side but we usually play pretty well at home, so it’ll be a good contest. We’re looking forward to the challenge.
