St Kilda’s Olivia Vesely has commended her side’s response after yesterday’s first-quarter blitz at the hands of Narrm, but insists the Saints must be better in the wake of the 26-point loss.

The Dees threatened to make quick work of the home side after bursting out of the blocks an unanswered six goals before the first change, but the Saints steadied the ship in the ensuing quarter to hold Narrm goalless for the remainder of the afternoon.

While Vesely told saints.com.au post-game that the fightback was pleasing, the manner in which it eventuated after conceding the opening six goals proved costly.

“The three-quarters we did fight, they had a few scoring opportunities, but we just needed to fight, fight, fight and we did that," Vesely said.

“It was pretty disappointing to start off (the way we did), but we came out in the second, the third and the fourth and really fought hard.

“We probably didn’t gel as well as we could have and our communication was down, and we reflected on that just then.

“We’ll have a hard week out on the track to make sure we are ready for the Suns.”

Vesely was one of the Saints' leading players across the afternoon, knuckling down after the opposition's initial surge to finish with a team-high 16 disposals, five tackles and four clearances.

Sunday’s game marked the first week of AFLW Indigenous Round, with the Saints donning a new guernsey designed by proud Kirrae and Peek Wurrong woman and artist of the Gunditjmara nation, Bayley Mifsud.

As one of the club’s most passionate advocates for deepening the connection to Indigenous culture, Vesely said she was honoured to run out on RSEA Park in the design.

“I’m so proud to be able to wear this,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to be at St Kilda and how inclusive the club has been. The way Aunty Katrina has educated us, we are all learning, and we are continuing to learn.

“A day like this celebrating Indigenous culture and history is inspiring and awesome to be a part of. I feel very lucky and privileged to be here at the Saints.”

St Kilda will continue its Indigenous Round celebrations this Saturday, heading up to Queensland for its first ever game in the state against the Gold Coast Suns.
