Skipper Jack Steele has topped St Kilda's Brownlow leaderboard for the third consecutive season, despite missing four games through injury.

On a night where Carlton star Patrick Cripps was crowned the 2022 Brownlow medallist on 29 votes, Steele polled 13 of his own to move up to 17th on the Saints' all-time tally.

HAYES HISTORY ON DEBUT

Jack Hayes became the first Saint to earn a Brownlow vote on debut in the 21st century, achieving the rare feat for his three-goal performance against Collingwood in Round 1.

The mature-age recruit followed in the footsteps of former Saints Dean Greig and Brodie Atkinson, who collected votes for their debuts in 1991 and 1993 respectively.

On the opposite end of the scale, spare a thought for Jason Blake, who took 210 games to poll his first Brownlow vote back in 2012.

WAIT ENDS FOR ANOTHER JACK

It's remarkable to think that a player of Jack Sinclair's quality took 123 games to earn his first Brownlow vote.

In a season that saw him claim maiden All-Australian and Trevor Barker Award honours, the 27-year-old finally broke his Brownlow duck thanks to a two-vote performance against the Hawks in Round 4.

Coupled with Jack Steele's three votes in that thumping victory, the Saints became the first club in history to surpass 300 votes from all their Jacks combined.

Sinclair's stellar season was further recognised with three-vote performances against North Melbourne (Round 11) and Carlton (16).

SAINTS MAKE HISTORY IN FINAL-ROUND LOSS

They may not have taken home the four points, but the Saints polled each of the six Brownlow votes available in their 14-point Round 23 defeat to Sydney, becoming the first side to do so in a loss in 16 years and only the eighth in AFL history.

Three of Brett Ratten's charges caught the attention of the umpires with eye-catching displays, in what was effectively a dead rubber for the Saints whose finals hopes were all but over going into the game. Against his former side, Dan Hannebery polled three votes in his final outing, while Ben Long secured two and Jack Steele rounded out the vote-getters. The last team to achieve this feat was Essendon, which did so in a three-point defeat against St Kilda.
