Matt Finnis’ time as St Kilda Football Club Chief Executive Officer has officially come to an end, with the respected administrator finishing his final official day at the club yesterday.

After nearly nine years and countless milestones, Finnis will hand over the reins to Simon Lethlean, who will assume the position from Monday.

“It’s difficult to put into words just how much my time at the Saints has meant to me. The privilege of leading this club as CEO is far more than a career highlight,” Finnis said.

“It is the people I have met along the journey that have made the decision to move on all the more difficult, because each and every interaction I have shared with a fellow Saint over my time has enriched my experience as CEO and left a mark on me personally.”

Finnis presided over some significant changes to the club throughout his tenure, including steering the club’s move back to Moorabbin, the introduction of the inaugural AFLW program and the establishment of the Danny Frawley Centre for health and wellbeing.

“It has taken a lot of hard work from a lot of people, but I’m very proud to see how far we’ve come and I’m confident the initiatives that have been introduced will form a lasting legacy for our club,” Finnis said.

Finnis was quick to recognise those he shared his time with, crediting past and present Presidents Peter Summers and Andrew Bassat for their vision and commitment.

“Peter and Andrew, along with all the Directors, executive members, staff and volunteers I’ve had the privilege of working beside have strengthened the foundations of this club on and off the field and I thank them for their professional and personal support along the journey,” he said.

Finnis said his ultimate thanks went to those members who wear the tricolours with pride and form the backbone of the club.

“Right throughout COVID in particular, I’ve been amazed at the fortitude and loyalty of our tribe,” he said.

“To have 60,000 members heading into the 150th anniversary year gives me great confidence that the future is bright for the Saints.”

In handing over the reins to Chief Operating Officer Simon Lethlean, Finnis has overseen a leadership transition which will promote continuity in a host of important club initiatives but also drive the impetus for changes required for on-field success.

“It has been fantastic to work closely alongside Simon Lethlean for a number of years and I can confidently say that the club is in great hands,” Finnis said.

“I wish Simon and the team all the best for what I know will be an exciting next chapter for the St Kilda Football Club.”
