St Kilda have triumphed on a picturesque Sunday afternoon in Sandringham, winning a high-tension VFL thriller 85-70 against the Zebras.

A third quarter blitz set up a dramatic victory for the Saints in the inaugural Trevor Barker Cup, a new tradition honouring a champion of both clubs.

Angus Hastie (30 disposals) provided spark off half-back, Kye Fincher (22 disposals, 1 goal) was strong through midfield and James Barrat (10 intercepts) was crucial in defence.

Vice-captain Ned Maginness opening proceedings for the Saints with a fantastic goal from the pocket to register St Kilda’s first goal for the afternoon. Kye Fincher lead the way at the contest, registering eight disposals and two clearances in the first quarter. After back-and-forth goals, Sandringham broke through late in the quarter, with two goals in quick succession to give the Zebras a three point lead heading into the quarter-time break.

After an inaccurate start in front of the sticks from both teams, the intensity elevated at Trevor Barker Oval. Isaac Keeler kicked the Saints’ first goal of the second term within just two minutes, getting St Kilda’s nose back in front. After two consecutive goals from the Zebras, the Saints then responded with urgency, kicking three goals on the spin within just six minutes. Patrick Said kicked the last major of the term with the Saints banking a six-point lead heading into the major break.

Keeler kicked his second major to kickstart St Kilda’s charge after the break as the Saints ramped up the intensity around the contest and it paid dividends. The Saints gained possession for long patches throughout the term, whilst also working hard defensively in the heat of the battle to hold the Zebras to just three behinds. Lance Collard and Jayden Davey showcased their skills in front of goals, kicking a major each to round off a successful third term – elevating the visitors’ margin out to a game-high 22 points heading into the final change.

It was a sluggish start to the fourth and final quarter as the Zebras failed to convert in front of goals on multiple occasions early in the final stanza. The Saints then found their rhythm, as Jayden Davey kicked his second for the day. Tyson Nagel joined in and secured his first goal in a timely manner short after as the finish line was in sight for the Saints. Kye Fincher kicked the sealer with an unbelievable goal to close out the game and run away 15-point winners at Trevor Barker Oval.

Key defender Ethan Phillips made his St Kilda debut after crossing over from Carlton's VFL program and impressed down back.

The Saints will look to go back-to-back as they return home to RSEA Park to face Casey on Saturday.
