The Trevor Barker Award has always been St Kilda's night of nights.

But you would never have guessed it judging by the fashion trends in years gone by.

These get-ups may have been the height of fashion at the time, but now...well, we'll let you be the judge.

From baggy pants, outrageous ties and questionable hairdos, here's a special shout-out to some of the more interesting appearances of St Kilda's stars.

Nicky Winmar, Nathan Burke & Stewart Loewe | 1995

Nicky Winmar, Nathan Burke and Stewart Loewe all looked amazing in the red, white and black.

Unfortunately, they didn't quite come out so sharp at the 1995 Trevor Barker Award.

'Burkey' managed to find a vile tie that matched his flame-red hair, while Nicky and 'Buckets' fashioned theirs from what appear to be discounted carpet offcuts.

The style, which we like to call "rug store-chic", was pulled off nicely by the three gentlemen, but it's definitely not a look that holds up today.

Special props to Stewie, who did his best Mr Bean impersonation with his tweed jacket.

Loewe and Burke seem oblivious to their outlandish fashion, but the look in Winmar's eye and his hesitant smile seems to indicate he knew this photograph will haunt him a few years down the track.

Rating: 3/3 horrific ties

Barry Hall | 1996

We all remember big, bad, bustling, bald Barry Hall terrorising the opposition throughout his career.

But lesser-known were the singed ringlets that once adorned his shiny bonce and terrorised all in 1996.

Rivalling Nathan Burke in terms of fire-engine-likeness, Hall's red locks stood out from the crowd as his gleaming white shirt contrasted well with those wiry curls.

It's probably no surprise that he picked up the clippers in the next few seasons.

Robert Harvey & Nathan Burke | 1996

The word 'mistake' was not one that appeared in Robert Harvey or Nathan Burke's dictionary, but these ties definitely were.

In case it was ever unclear which team he played for, the No. 3 took it upon himself to wear a tie which screamed Saints (literally!).

Admittedly, the colour scheme complemented the Trevor Barker Award around his neck, which made another appearance in 1999.

Meanwhile, 'Harvs' has rolled with the same haircut for close to four decades.

Thankfully, that Christmas tablecloth-inspired tie hasn't been seen since this photograph was taken.

Peter Everitt | 1997

The year was 1997. The Macarena was huge, Snake was about to launch on mobile phones and Friends was into just its fourth season.

But just what Peter Everitt was thinking that fateful year when he selected his wardrobe for the Trevor Barker Award we may never know.

An oversized 70s-inspired burnt orange button-up, held together at the top by one of the weirder neckties ever designed, was the outfit of choice for our man ‘Spida’.

The fact that the big man’s frosted dreads and aggressive dark regrowth meld in seamlessly with his setup is, in this case, not a good thing.

Peter Everitt | 1999

With age comes wisdom.

But apparently not so for Peter Everitt, who clearly didn't learn from his horrendous get-up two years prior.

Gone was the putrid orange shirt (thank goodness), but incredibly, the necktie was somehow worse than his infamous 1997 offence.

The square, geometric style had carried over, with flowers now covering every square inch of the loud and obscene accessory.

The seedy grin and dirty dreads don't help your cause, sorry Spida!

Aaron Hamill | 2001

The White Stripes had hit peak popularity going into the new millenium, and Aaron Hamill sought to take advantage of it.

The Jack White-inspired long, slicked hair symmetrically parted completed the rockstar look for 'Sammy', who back in his heyday was one of the Saints' biggest heartthrobs (as evidenced by this snap).

Unfortunately, Hamill didn't quite nail the band's trademark red, white and black – missing out on a slam dunk on multiple fronts – and instead opted for a questionable bottle-green shirt.

The pen mark on his cheek really completed the look, too.

Aaron Hamill & Stephen Milne | 2002

Well, we can't knock that bottle-green shirt too much, because it must have been so popular that 'Sammy' went around in it again the following year.

Stephen Milne showed more restraint, rolling with a crisp number that complemented his pearly whites, but his unique hairdo offset everything.

Known for his electricity on the field, the No. 44 took it to a whole new level, opting for the all-time classic "I've-just-been-electrocuted" look.

Tip-Rat and Sammy were a classic forward combo, but not so much a fashion combo.

3.5/5

Nick Dal Santo | 2006

It's a good thing there wasn't a strong breeze, because Nick Dal Santo would have been blown away in his plus-sized suit.

The wild, spiked hair was all the rage in the mid-2000s, with the young Saint a frontrunner in the gel-fuelled revolution.

Although far less vulgar in attire compared to previous years, the three-piece does Dal no real favours.

He was known as the 'smooth mover', but this cardboard-like setup is anything but smooth.
