SANDRINGHAM has continued its charge towards a top eight position after thumping Coburg by 45 points on Saturday at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

A nine-goal opening quarter to the Zebras all but ended the contest at the first break, as Coburg had no answers to the Sandringham onslaught.

Tom Simpkin, Sam Dunell, Spencer White and Trent Dennis-Lane were the best for the Zebras while Blake Acres, Clinton Jones and Josh Saunders all played important roles throughout the contest.

The Zebras came out and stamped their intent early, illustrating just how damaging they can be when confidence levels are high.  The game was seemingly played in the Zebras forward half in the opening quarter as the defensive pressure of the Sandringham team proved too much for Coburg to handle.

Sandringham’s dominance was reflected on the scoreboard, kicking nine goals to Coburg’s one in a thoroughly dominant first term.
The only negative of the quarter was an injury to Lewis Pierce, who left the ground and was unable to return to the field for the remainder of the game.

Determined not to let Coburg back into the game, Sandringham continued to slow the tempo down. Ultimately, the Zebras were able to hold Coburg goalless in the second quarter - extending the margin to 61-points at the main break.

In a more evenly contested third quarter, the Zebras managed to hang on to their advantage despite Coburg’s best efforts.  Blake Acres in particular impressed with his overhead marking, taking several strong grabs and then using the ball effectively by hand and foot.

With the margin at 66 points at three-quarter time, Sandringham took their foot off the gas in the final term as Coburg dominated the majority of the quarter to kick six goals to the Zebras’ three, reducing the winning margin back to 45 points.

Sandringham will travel to Avalon Airport Oval next Saturday to take on Werribee. The match will be televised on ABC1 for Victorian viewers with the game commencing at 1:10pm.
