My first experience there, was as a 12 year old in 1971, when the Saints beat Collingwood easily, and one of the Saints great players of the era, Allan Davis bagged ten goals. Another telling player that day was a young Glenn Elliott who played in the centre against the highly credentilled Barry Price, and beat him fare and square! He later went on to be a great player for the Saints, and also for the 'Big V'.
In the late '70s I was there on the last day of the 1978 season when the Saints squared off against Carlton. A win would put us into the finals as long as another game went our way ( I think it was Geelong vs Fitzroy). The Saints fulfilled their part of the bargain, by giving their more highly fancied opponents a whipping, but it was to no avail, as the other game didn't go our way. That was the day that Robbie Muir took umbrage to something that Dennis Collins said to him, which is now a part of Moorabbin folklore.
Another day that I was there was when Jeff Fehring kicked a goal from the centre bounce, as he just roosted it, and it sailed through for a goal.
By the time that a bloke called Tony :Lockett came to play for the Saints at Mighty Moorabbin, I was living in Swan Hill, but the distance was not a problem, because in that time of the Saints history, Moorabbin was the place to be! Every now and then I would either drive down, and stay in the City, catching the train out to Moorabbin to watch the boys, and just enjoy the magnificent atmosphere that this great ground produced. Alternatively, I would catch the train down, leaving early in the morning, and arriving home late at night, but in the meantime I had been to Moorabbin to watch the Saints! Tony Lockett and Nicky Winmar playing for the Saints were very, very special days at Moorabbin. Not to mention the day that it rained and rained all day (against Collingwood), and Joffa Cunningham, and Greg Burns, and the great Trevor Barker were playing, We got done, and I will always remember that I was soaked right through, but I didn't care because I'd been to Moorabbin, and I'd watched the Saints play!
The last time I went to Moorabbin was the last game we played there, against Fitzroy in 1982. I was a guest of a member, and watched the game in the stand, but I recall vividly how good it would have been to be out on the terraces, with the fans who made Moorabbin famous.
Thanks for the opportunity
