ST KILDA’S two-week altitude camp in Boulder may have come to an end but its benefits will continue to linger according to coach Scott Watters.

Watters said the camp would serve to be the launching pad for the Saints’ season.

“There’s never really an end point to it. Certainly it was a good couple of weeks. The boys worked extremely hard,” Watters told saints.com.au.

“Physically it has been demanding but as a team there have been a number of different initiatives that have put them under pressure and they have coped really well.

Watters spoke as his players completed a gruelling run that finished in the iconic Red Rocks amphitheatre, which he said gave them a taste of local culture while also taking their training to a whole new level.

“The culmination today was at one of the most iconic venues in the States,” he said.

“It was a really tough run for them today but like everything they’ve done over the past two weeks they have done it in the right spirit and there is a real sense of purpose to the way they are training so I couldn’t be happier with the way they’re going.”

The Saints spent two weeks in close quarters at the club’s base in Boulder which Watters said gave him a whole new insight into the character of his players.

“You learn every day. That’s the great thing about coaching, something unfolds almost every minute with your group,” he said.

“It is an evolving relationship between the coaches and the players and all the staff. The team is a living beast, there’s no doubt about it.”

And the Saints are already planning to make Boulder an annual event to give it an edge over its opponents.

“This will be part of what we do. It’s a key catalyst at the start of the year,” Watters said.

“A good two-week block here really sets up the start of the season. It will certainly be on the calendar again.”
