Every player realises their “dream come true” once they make it to the AFLW, but for Rhi Watt, that well-worn cliché hit home a little bit more.
The passionate St Kilda fan and Southern Saints best-and-fairest was inducted as the club’s inaugural co-captain after a season with the Blues, with the way she played the perfect display of leadership, consistency and reliability.
Watt was internally regarded as a “leader of the people”, and similar to AFL coach Brett Ratten, was a major driver in the new side’s connection and cohesion.
On-field, her impact was just as widely felt.
Whether it be a strong, contested mark in the defensive half, a skilful tap in the ruck or a memorable goal at Ikon Park, Watt’s output never wavered.
Watt was again elected as co-captain of the club heading into Season 2021 alongside Kate Shierlaw, Cat Phillips and new inclusion Hannah Priest.
