Information for local residents: Moorabbin Oval works

Last updated: 6 Sept 2021

How long will the oval be out of bounds?

The turf redevelopment is expected to take approximately six months from start to finish, with completion due February 2022. The ground will not be accessible during this time.

How much will it cost?

The renovation, which includes an overhaul of the ground’s current turf, drainage, irrigation system and footpaths, will cost approximately $2mil and has been made possible with the support of the Federal Government, Victorian Government, Kingston City Council and the AFL.

The groundworks forms part of an ongoing redevelopment which has transformed the RSEA Park precinct into a state of the art training and administration facility for St Kilda athletes, the Sandringham Dragons, SFNL and SMJFL.

Will it be accessible to the community again after the works?

Yes. The ground will be accessible to the public once works have been completed.

How long will this turf last? Will we have to do this again?

The renovation and upgrade will provide a decade of excellent conditions. The improved quality and durability of the turf will also provide far more hours per week of usage than what is currently possible.

Was there community consultation conducted prior to these works?

Since the early beginnings of the RSEA Park development, St Kilda Football Club has worked closely with the Kingston City Council to ensure that the community was represented in the decision making.

Will the project be noisy or disruptive?

There will be minimal noise pollution however at times, there will be vehicle and truck access via the RSEA carpark which may at times cause noise. Given the earthworks, there may also be an increase is dust and dirt around the ground itself. Surrounding parks and paths, such as the secondary oval and dog park will not be impacted by the works.

Will path access around the ground be restricted?

Yes. The track directly surrounding the oval has been impacted and therefore there will be restricted. However, residents can still access the grass area directly opposing the building and of course continue to use the path circling the dog park and secondary ground.
