Mattaes Phillipou will look to put his hand up for selection this week ahead of Spud’s Game after experiencing a minor setback at training last Wednesday.

The 20-year-old was on track make a return from a pre-season stress fracture last weekend before sustaining a corked quad at training.

The young midfielder was given every opportunity to prove his fitness prior to the clash against Fremantle, however, didn’t quite tick all the boxes. He will now undergo a fitness test during tomorrow’s main session to determine his availability to face Carlton this Friday night at the MCG.

“It was a frustrating set-back for Mattaes, who was ready to return last week,” EGM of Football David Misson said.

“We gave him every chance, but unfortunately, he wasn’t able to get up on the day. He’s improved immensely and we’re hopeful he’ll be in a position to be selected this week.”

Mason Wood is continuing to progress through concussion protocols and will need to complete full contact training during tomorrow’s main session to put his hand up for selection.

Both Dan Butler (Achilles) and Patrick Said (calf) are closing in on a return, with the pair expected to be available in the coming weeks.
