With North Melbourne star Brent Harvey breaking the VFL/AFL games record this weekend, we thought what a perfect opportunity to keep the celebratory vibes flowing. With the football honouring the most games, we've decided to dip our lid to the forgotten men. We want to appreciate the players who were here for a good time, not a long time.

This week we celebrate those whose VFL/AFL careers at St Kilda lasted just one game. We salute you, boys.

Jackson Ferguson

Initially taken under St Kilda’s wing as a NSW Scholarship Recipient in 2008, Ferguson waited five years until he was given an opportunity at AFL level. Making his debut in 2013 against North Melbourne, Ferguson had a tough first day at the office - subbed off at half time with only three handballs. Crippled with knee injuries, he was later delisted at season’s end.

Christian Lister

One game, one win. 100% record. Christian Lister will forever be remembered as a winner. Selected with pick 77 in the 1989 VFL Draft, Lister made his debut as a 21-year-old against Brisbane at Moorabbin in 1990. Finishing the game with 11 disposals, Lister's career finished having never experienced defeat.

Daniel Archer

What an eventful one game career. Drafted with pick 36 in the 2010 Rookie Draft, Archer made his debut on Friday Night Footy against Richmond in 2011. While the key forward from Tasmania didn’t have a great night statistically (8 disposals, three marks), the opportunity to complete the childhood presented him late on. With a chance to win the game, Archer’s set shot went wide for a point. He would not play again and was delisted at the end of 2012.

Chris Hemley

Imagine the pressure. As compensation for losing Tony Lockett to Sydney in 1994, St Kilda received pick 13 – which was used draft Chris Hemley. Playing just the one game against Adelaide in 1995, the tall halfback was later delisted at season’s end. His career was revived by Geelong in 1998, but he would not play a game.

Justin Sweeney

What does Justin Sweeney and David Armitage have in common? They both debuted against Hawthorn in round 8, 2007. In wet and slipperly conditions, Armitage (nine disposals, four tackles) and Sweeney (eight touches, six contested) had a similar impact in their first games. While Armitage would become a star midfielder, Sweeney was delisted at the end of 2007.

Dave Strickland

What a talented lad. If being a league footballer wasn’t enough, Strickland was also an elite runner. Playing the one and only game in 1900, Strickland also competed at the Stawell Gift – winning in 12 seconds with a 10m handicap. He also had the opportunity to compete at the 1900 Olympics in Paris, but that dream was crushed through lack of funds. His daughter Shirley was also quite the talented athlete.

Will Johnson

Sometimes it pays showing off in front of the parents. Playing for St Kilda-aligned Sandringham in the VFL, Johnson caught the eye of Saints recruits and was drafted in 2009. Much like Ferguson, the key defender was made to wait – making his debut in Round 6 of 2011 against Adelaide. It was short-lived, injured early on in the contest after collecting just three touches. He would never play again.

Alf Bedford

The trailblazer for one gamers. Bedford made his debut in 1897, recorded in the history books as St Kilda’s third capped player. Playing against Collingwood at Victoria Park, Bedford’s only game would be in a losing side. Don’t let that diminish his importance to St Kilda’s history. He set the tone as the first ever one-gamer.

Enrico Misso

Misso finds himself in elite company. Not just for his one-game career, but for a high jumper number. Wearing number 50, the 196cm ruckman had 11 disposals and eight hitouts in the loss to Carlton. It was a brief stay, but Misso will forever be remembered for both his one game and rocking the number 50.
