Number 33 has historically been one of the more low key numbers at the St Kilda football club.
The criteria to have your name printed on a locker at St Kilda and most other AFL clubs is that a player must have played 100 games, won a best and fairest or played in a premiership in that number.
As it stands, only two names are printed on the 33 locker at St Kilda – James Gwilt and Robert Elphinstone.
Elphinstone was originally recruited from Seaford, which is the Saints’ modern day base.

In 157 games throughout the 1980s, Elphinstone established himself as a key part of the St Kilda defence and represented Victoria in a state of origin match in 1983.
He holds the games record for no. 33 at the Saints but could be eclipsed within a couple of years by Gwilt who this year notched up his 100th game for the Saints.
Gwilt has played 109 games since he was taken as a smokey draft pick at the end of 2004 from suburban club Noble Park.
For several years he was considered a fringe player at the Saints but was one of the team’s best players in the 2010 drawn Grand Final and the replay the following week. After rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2011, Gwilt came back strongly to resume his place in the St Kilda backline.
Brian Sierakowski and his son David both began their careers in the no. 33 before they each moved to 13 three decades apart. Shane Wakelin was another to start out in 33 before moving up to 12.
But the most famous occupant of the no. 33 is less known for his football achievements as he is for his business legacy.
Lindsay Fox was an undersized ruckman who made his debut for the club in 1959 and played 20 games over three seasons.
After his football career came to an end, Fox began a trucking business that soon evolved into a multi-million dollar enterprise.
He was president of the Saints from 1980 to 1985.
James Gwilt
“It was completely by chance that I ended up with no. 33. I arrived at the club at the same time as Andrew McQualter, Mark McGough and Cain Ackland and we were just given what was available. We all got lockers near each other though – Andrew got 32, Mark got 30 and Cain had 28 so we were all near each other in the locker room.
Trent Knobel had just left the club to go to Richmond and that left 33 available.
I had worn number 18 at my previous club Noble Park but Brendon Goddard had that at St Kilda so I wasn’t going to get it. My favourite number was actually 12 but I was less even less likely to get that since Nick Riewoldt was well and truly established by the time I was drafted.
I remember the club asked me in 2010 if I wanted to move up the pecking order to a single digit number but I said no. By that point I felt like 33 had become a part of me so I didn’t really want to change it.”
