ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon believes his side is primed and ready for finals football.

Speaking after the Saints 47-point win over last-placed Melbourne at the MCG, Lyon said the season now starts again for his side desperate to claim its second premiership cup.

“We have got confidence in our game plan and we’re fit and in really good shape,” the St Kilda coach said.

“The new season starts now so we are really excited.”

After a slow start saw the Demons lead by two goals at quarter-time, Lyon was pleased with the performance of his side after the first break.

“I think there was a bit of nerves – first time at the MCG and a game you're expected to win – there was a bit of scratchiness but we competed really well and won the contested ball,” he said.

“We just sort of grounded our way with good ball movement and scoring efficiency.”

With the Saints playing their first game at the MCG this season, the St Kilda coach said his players had benefited greatly from playing at the home of football.

“It was a great experience playing at the MCG with that swirly breeze,” Lyon said.

“[Playing in] that outdoors environment – it’s been a positive for us today.”

Lyon said he wasn’t too concerned with the Saints form leading up to the finals, despite dropping its previous two matches against Essendon and North Melbourne.

"We would have loved to have won the last two, but the bottom line is we lost them by a kick," he said.

"We understand it is a new season, and those past results mean nothing."

With Michael Gardiner, Luke Ball and Max Hudghton desperate to force their way into the side, Lyon acknowledged the Saints had some selection decisions to ponder over the next week.

"It’s a really difficult time. There are always some hard-luck stories but that’s AFL footy - we don’t get employed on sentiment," he said.

The St Kilda coach is confident and excited by the prospects of his side, as they head into September with a 20-2 win-loss record.

"We’re now in the period where we need extraordinary efforts and that will be the expectation," he said.

"I think our fans would be excited about our next month – we’ll give it our best shot."
