GEELONG will be without star midfielder Jimmy Bartel for this week’s clash with St Kilda after he accepted a one-match suspension.
Bartel was charged with a Level Two Bumping or Making Forceful Contact from Front-On Offence (250 demerit points, two-match sanction) for Making Forceful Contact from Front-On against Adelaide’s Rory Laird during the second quarter of the Crows’ win over the Cats last weekend.
He chose to accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Adelaide Crows Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points).
This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 250 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has two matches suspended within the last two years, which do not impact on this offence. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 187.50 points and a one-match sanction.
Bartel’s teammate James Podsiadly was also cited by the MRP, charged with a Level One Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for Engaging in Rough Conduct against Adelaide’s Richard Douglas.
But Podsiadly is free to play against the Saints with the option to accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.
Bartel’s fellow Norm Smith medallist Steve Johnson will return to the Cats team after a one-game suspension.
