St Kilda Football Club's Moorabbin Airport First Nations & Multicultural Scholarship Program, thanks to the Goodman Foundation, is making a real impact inspiring the next generation of community leaders.

The scholarship program is an off-field initiative designed to support young First Nations and multicultural participants from the southern region on their community sporting journey.

Young footballer James Windust is a proud member of the program and spoke on his experiences...

How has the program grown over your time in it?

James: The program has changed significantly in my time here. It’s developed into a community where culture and identity is really celebrated. There’s more workshops, more voices being heard and more opportunities for people like me to grow.

What personal growth have you experienced during your time in the program?

James: My confidence has definitely developed through these workshops in media, design and leadership. They’ve all given me opportunities to speak up and challenge myself, which has allowed me to grow as a person.

As you have been in the program for a number of years, how have you seen the program impact others around you within the program?

James: I’ve seen my friends be braver and more courageous in their actions, whether it be on the footy field or at school. I’ve also seen those in the community have a greater sense of culture and passion towards the multi-cultural and First Nations communities.

Can you share an experience where you felt the program positively challenged you?

James: I had to do a speech on graduation night last year and it was super nerve-wracking. I got through it and felt I was super capable and confident within myself and who I was because of it. That was a pivotal moment for me.

In what ways has the program influenced your goals or aspirations beyond football?

James: Taking these values out of these workshops has certainly given me opportunities to take what I’ve gained in these workshops to the outside world and share it with the community.

Have you noticed any changes in how you approach challenges or setbacks since joining the program?

James: I remember Peter Bol talking about resilience at the start of the year, and that gave me insight to how professional athletes face challenges and failures. That was a turning point for me with my mindset.

What has been your favourite activity as part of the program so far?

James: We had a cultural food sharing night which was my first ever workshop. I put my hand up and felt almost embarrassed to present, but everyone gave me the upmost attention and made me feel very welcomed. That flicked the switch with me to realise I’m really welcome here and I’m proud of who I am and my culture.

What song describes your time in the program best?

James: From little things big things grow – Paul Kelly
