Co-captain Callum Wilkie’s streak of consecutive AFL games is set to continue, with the star defender available to face Collingwood this Sunday night in Opening Round.
Wilkie was subbed out in the early moments of the Saints’ AAMI Community Series match against Essendon on Saturday afternoon after suffering a corked calf, with the defender taking no further part in the Ballarat win.
“Taking Cal out of the game was a precautionary move, but he’s pulled up well and will train fully this week,” EGM Football Lenny Hayes said.
“We’re looking forward to watching Cal lead the team out alongside Jack Sinclair for the first time this weekend.”
Similarly, Jack Silvagni is shaping as a likely Opening Round option after exiting concussion protocols.
“Jack will have a few markers to hit this week, however it’s looking positive, which is exciting."
Meanwhile, Ryan Byrnes is set to face some time on the sidelines after suffering a foot injury in the third quarter of Saturday’s game.
“It’s a disappointing result for Ryan, who had been impressive throughout pre-season and in the first two hit-outs,” Hayes said.
“We’re currently awaiting additional scan results and consultation from specialists to decide on next steps for Ryan and we’ll be able to provide a timeline after that.”
Max King has continued to progress through his calf and knee rehabilitation block.
“It’s been a frustrating run for Max, who was nearing the end of his knee rehabilitation when he sustained a calf injury but we’re confident he’ll be back out in the front half of the season.”
In other injury news, Liam Henry has been given a return to play timeline after suffering a hamstring strain in January.
The young forward is currently working through a structured running and strength program, which is set to see him return in approximately 6 to 7 weeks.
Moreover, Irishman Liam O’Connell is currently working through non-contact training after suffering facial fractures in a training knock a few weeks ago.
The defender has commenced non-contact training and running progressions after being cleared of concussion protocols.
