St Kilda champion Nicky Winmar admits he is proud of his sons prominent involvement in this weekend’s inaugural Pride Game.
Flanked by his 28-year-old son, Tynan, at a press conference at Linen House Centre on Thursday, Winmar said that it’s important to take a stand against homophobia so that people don’t suffer because of who they are.
“I’m proud of my son. It was hard at first but we’ve got to be there for our family and our friends,” Winmar said at a press conference on Thursday.
“I think it’s very important that we’ve done this. I didn’t think it was going to go to what it is now. If you are what you are, be proud of what you are.
“It’s very important that these kids that are in the next generation are supported by everybody because we are all human.”
Winmar implored those with diverse backgrounds to be proud of who they are, regardless of what gender, race or sexual preference they are.
“There are people like my son out there, there may be other players who might have played AFL themselves and may have children in the same area, just stand up and be proud of who we are,” Winmar said.
“I’m proud of standing up for my colour and my culture and I’m proud of my son for standing up for his sexuality.”
