The winds of change have swept through since Jack Newnes first entered the leadership group as the youngest member three years ago.

Now, he is one the more established leaders in the group, with the Saints announcing the inclusion of key forward Josh Bruce, midfielder Seb Ross and defender Dylan Roberton for the first time this week.

Ahead of his sixth season in the AFL and with his 100th game within touching distance, Newnes has welcomed the changing shape of the leadership demographic, confident the presence of Nick Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna and Sean Dempster will assist the transition.

“It’s a massive change since I’ve been at the club. I’m really excited to have those boys in,” Newnes told saints.com.au at a broadcast shoot at Channel Seven this week.

“It’s great for ‘Brucey’, ‘Robbo’ and Seb to step in and take their game and leadership to a new level.

“‘Rooey’, ‘Shinner’ and ‘Joey’ stepping out is a big thing too, but I guess they’re not going anywhere they are still going to be around to show great leadership.

“Still having those guys around will be massive. It’s not going to be an easy thing to do, but I’m sure with those guys around, great coaches, great team, it will all work out.”

Newnes validated the appointment of Jarryn Geary as the new captain of the club, describing the 28-year-old as the ultimate teammate and someone you want to go to war with.

“He’s one of the most respected players in the group. He’s down the line but he’s also really approachable, all the boys feel fine going and speaking to him,” Newnes said.

“Everyone wants to play like ‘Gears’; he’s one of your teammates that you want to play next to; he always puts his body on the line; he’s always there to support you and he’s probably the first player picked every week; he’s a great leader and I can’t wait to play under him.”
