The National Draft night is about welcoming new players to AFL clubs, but for Ollie Geale, it will be a case of officially joining the club he has loved since childhood for a one in a lifetime behind-the-scenes experience.

For those who have religiously followed AIS academies, Under 18 championships and phantom drafts, Ollie’s isn’t a name that would be immediately familiar.

But to a comedy fan base in South Australia, Geale might just be one of the biggest rising young talents gracing the Adelaide Convention Centre on Draft Night, November 23.

The host of ‘Banter With Ollie Geale’ on Adelaide’s Channel 9 combines that role with duties with Adelaide’s Nova 919 as a panel operator and as part of the station’s promotional team.

His latest media move has seen him selected to join St Kilda as a Digital Draft Ambassador, which will see him film and interview key club officials - and possibly our pick no.14 - next week and promote that content through the club and his own social media channels.

For Geale, it is a dream come true.

“I’ve always been a massive Saints fan,” he said.

“I grew up in Tasmania and my dad grew up in the same area as Darrel Baldock. My dad was always a massive Saints man and I got the jumper as a kid and haven’t looked back.”

Geale’s enthusiastic and off-beat style promises to give a different slant to the Saints’ National Draft coverage.

While most interviews surrounding the draft focus on addressing positional needs, picking the best available player or how to work with the new bidding system, Geale is looking at things slightly differently.

“I like to consider my style a bit cheeky and I want to have a bit of fun with the guys,” he said.

“The big question is the man bun, will we be looking at boosting that? Josh Bruce has a fantastic man bun, and I want to know are we looking to get a few through the midfield so I will obviously be asking Richo about that.

“In terms of the footy side of things, we’ll definitely be having a chat about future plans and where we see our club going on that road to 2018.”

The 21-year-old said he, like all fans, was genuinely excited about the buzz around St Kilda’s young team.

“Last year was a massive experience for all the Saints fans with having the first draft pick at the Draft. This year I’ve been researching the field a bit, there are a few (players) that are Saints fans in the mix which is good to see,” he said.

“There’s a young lad with the Geelong Falcons so that would be good to bring some lads together who already know each other following on from McCartin and Goddard last year.”

As for the lonely life of a Saints supporter living in the City of Churches, Geale said it was impossible to avoid the saturation coverage given to the Power and the Crows, but he still indulged his red, white and black passion while finding the odd kindred spirit along the way.

“I’ve only recently got Foxtel and that’s been good because watching games on my phone has been tough. I’ve really only got a maximum of two opportunities a year to see the boys live but there is actually quite a big community of Saints fans based in Adelaide,” he said.

“There is something nice about an away game to give a nod to everyone who walks past with the same colours. I was at Lenny Hayes’ retirement game which was a special experience and I’m buzzing for round one next year against Port Adelaide.”
