A PROMOTION for long-time St Kilda recruiter Tony Elshaug and the addition of former Carlton head recruiter Wayne Hughes headline changes to the Saints’ respected list-management and recruiting team.
Following a highly successfully 2014 National Draft, St Kilda has now completed its revamp of the team as part of wider changes to the football department.
Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel, Ameet Bains will continue to oversee the list management and recruiting areas including the management of the club’s Total Player Payment (TPP) and player contracting. Bains said that Elshaug had been recognised for his strong work ethic, expertise and leadership.
The odd couple: Bains and Elshaug.
“With his vast AFL experience as a player and coach, Tony is one of the best recruiters in industry. In recognition of that, he has been promoted to Recruiting and List Manager and will assume additional list management responsibilities,” Bains told SAINTS.com.au.
“He will effectively have day-to-day responsibility for delivering on our trade and draft strategy and for managing our network of recruiters.”
In other changes announced today, former St Kilda National Recruiting Manager (1989-94) and more recently Carlton Recruiting Manager, Wayne Hughes, has been appointed to a new full-time position of Pro-scout while Mark Smart and Chris Toce have been appointed as full-time Recruiting Analysts.

“Wayne has a wealth of experience in the industry which we will benefit from,” Bains said.
“His main areas of responsibility as Pro-scout will be the tracking of AFL-listed players for trade and free-agency purposes.
“Mark has most recently been working as Talent Manager for the Oakleigh Chargers. During his time overseeing the program, Oakleigh have won two of the last three TAC Cup Premierships and had numerous players drafted including Jack Billings and Daniel McKenzie.
“Chris has spent the last few years working in Collingwood’s recruiting department which we believe has equipped him well for the role he will play with us.
“Both Mark and Chris will join fellow Recruiting Analyst Chris Liberatore and part-time recruiting officers John Beveridge and Glen Bewick in focusing on general recruiting activities across the country.”
St Kilda finalises 2015 coaching panel.
Hughes and Smart will start work on 2nd February while Toce starts on 2nd March.
The club will continue to employ a network of part-time recruiters across the country.
Bains said that the changes had been made to help the club consolidate its part-time network of recruiters into more full-time positions while also placing a greater focus on AFL-listed players given the club’s list profile and strong TPP position.
