SAM Gilbert’s signature mop of hair is getting the chop.

The 27-year-old defender has vowed to shave his head on Saturday March 1 at The Emerson, all in the name of Leukaemia and the World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser.

“My mum was very lucky to survive cancer so this is something very close to my heart,” Gilbert told SAINTS.com.au.

“So anything I can do to fast-track the research and raise awareness in the community is something I will jump at.”

“Each day 31 Australians will get the news they have blood cancer with hundreds of thousands of family members and friends affected every year by the disease. I’m more than happy to play a part in this fantastic cause.”

Gilbert has already raised $3,500 and is committed to reaching the magical $5,000 mark before his trademark blonde locks come off.

“It’s really fantastic how people have been so generous already, but I would love to get to the 5K barrier and even beyond. If someone wants to make an especially generous donation, then I will let them shave my head.”

Worlds Greatest Shave raises about half the money the Leukaemia Foundation needs to fund its important work – providing practical and emotional support to people with blood cancer, as well as investing millions of dollars in research.

Gilbert is understandably a little apprehensive ahead of the big day, given he has never been without his hair.

“My head has never been shaved so it’s a big thing for me. But if it means raising $5,000 for a great charity such as this then I’m sure it will be worth it,” he said.

“After all, my hair will grow back eventually… I hope! (laughs).”

Already generous donations have been received from Saints players such as Luke Delaney, Josh Bruce, Rhys Stanley, Tom Hickey, Jarryn Geary and Adam Schneider.

The World’s Greatest Shave event is open to anyone who wishes to come along on March 1.
