Young Gun Blog - Tom Curren
Young Gun Tom Curren tells us what's been happening at the Linen House Centre this week.
Hey guys, this is my second blog for the St Kilda Football Club website, have a read to get an inside into what went on at the Linen House Centre this week.
Monday:
To begin another week at the Linen House Centre, the players who played VFL on Sunday were in for recovery on Monday morning, and to report any injuries or soreness from the game against the Casey Scorpions. Another Monday morning responsibility we are expected to do is watch our vision from the previous game, identifying what was good or where we can improve. I watch my vision with development coach Paul Hudson which is fantastic as his feedback is always insightful and really constructive. After lunch we had the AFL review from the Rd 20 Fremantle game from the Friday night. After breaking down the game, the coaching staff outlined what we did well and perhaps what we can focus on to improve for the following week.
Tuesday:
Tuesday started a little different to a regular day within the St. Kilda Football Club, with the development group taking a trip to a local supermarket with one of our nutritionists, Dani. We identified the benefits of healthy eating and making the right snack and meal choices that will put us in good stead come training or game day. After that, we had to be back at the club for a 9am start to do some weights and an exercise bike workout. We then had our footy development session, where the whole squad sits in the theatre to watch some more vision, then we go for a stretch as a group and participate in some light touch work to improve and maintain our skills.
We then had lunch in the cafeteria, followed by the opposition report. This meeting is for the upcoming game against Collingwood, where we are told how we are going to play against the opposition and identify their strengths and weaknesses to give ourselves the best chance come game day.
Wednesday:
To start off the day, I had physio and massage appointments in the morning. We had a bit of spare time so I decided to knock over a bit of study for my Sport and Recreation course. This being a main training session day, we had a meeting with Ross as normal at midday then we all started our preparation for training. Wednesday’s training was in tough wet conditions but to the boys’ credit we had a good sharp session. As normal we had our post training leg weights, followed by our regular recovery protocol consisting of stretching and walking in the ice baths; which felt colder than normal on a wet and windy day. After our recovery the guys who played VFL had a meeting and reviewed the Casey game.
Thursday:
Yesterday we had an opportunity for some more career work or study time, so I went to work at the Dandenong Basketball Association, which is my workplace for my Tafe course. In the afternoon I went to the club and did some upper body weights and a bike/boxing session, then another ice bath to get ready for training today.
Friday:
As the AFL squad will be taking on Collingwood tonight, and due to the VFL squad playing on Sunday, we have another skills session in the morning, again followed by our usual leg weights and recovery protocol. We have the afternoon off today, so I will do some more study as one of my assignment’s due date is rapidly approaching. Then I will head to the game tonight at Etihad Stadium and watch the boys take it up to the Magpies.
Saturday:
As this week’s game for Sandringham is on Sunday, tomorrow we have the day off, so I will be doing my usual pre-game routine at the Linen House Centre, getting ready for the game against Box Hill.
Sunday:
Sunday is a must win game for the Zebra’s; let’s hope we can get up to keep our finals hopes alive.
St Kilda’s AFLW program has made further changes to its list ahead of the 2025 National Draft with Arianna Clarke and Lilu Hung informed they will not be offered a contract in 2026.
