IT HAS been an exciting week for St Kilda midfielder Leigh Montagna who proposed to his long-term girlfriend Erinn in the days before the Saints victory against Carlton on Monday night.
The 29-year-old told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast team on Wednesday morning he had been planning to surprise his girlfriend of four years with the proposal early last week before panellist Mick Molloy almost spoiled the plans.
“I’d been planning it for months, I’d snuck around and organised the ring and all of this stuff,” Montagna said in one of his regular segments on the show.
“I was doing really well but then he was going to blow the whole thing on air for me when I was going to do it that night!”
But with an extended break from footy, Montagna didn’t hesitate when he had the chance to take a short romantic trip to celebrate his four-year anniversary.
“Because we had the Monday night game we had the Saturday off so I took Erinn down to Daylesford on the Friday night for a nice dinner and organised it so that while we were out our little villa would have candles and a bath and a lit fire, chocolates and champagne and all of that sort of stuff,” he said.
“So the room was all set up when we left for dinner and I left a note for her and it all went well from there.”
To his delight Erinn said yes and was pleasantly surprised with the proposal.
“I asked her father a couple of weeks ago, and rang her mother as well. A couple of people knew and it all went really well keeping a secret from her. She wasn’t expecting it and it was a great weekend, (on) Mother’s day we were altogether with the families and had a nice Sunday afternoon lunch together.”
And as for the wedding…
“We haven’t organised it yet, it’s been three days! (But) it will be some stage next year.”
