Following the conclusion of the 2012 Gillette AFL Trade Period, St Kilda List Manager Ameet Bains said the Saints’ overall activity in the Trade period was a success.

St Kilda Football Club acquired talented forward Trent Dennis-Lane from the Sydney Swans in exchange for P.47 on the last day of the Trade Period.

“We addressed the need for two key position players in securing key forward Tom Lee from Claremont and ruckman Tom Hickey from the Gold Coast Suns, while also maintaining four picks inside 44 of the AFL National Draft,” Bains said.

“The acquisition of Trent Dennis-Lane will also add extra fire power and versatility to St Kilda’s forward line.”

The Saints were active on the final day of the Trade period with the Club trading Jamie Cripps and P.46 to West Coast in exchange for P.41 and P.44, following the midfielder’s expressed desire to return to Western Australia.

“In the end the deal for Jamie was delivered on compassionate grounds and we accommodated his request based on that situation,” Bains said.

“It was disappointing not to have got the deal done with Mitch Brown but he was a contracted player and we needed West Coast Eagles to agree to terms in order to release him.”

Heading into the 2012 NAB Draft, the Saints now have Pick 25, 26, 41, 44, 77, 95, 113 and 131.

St Kilda 2012 Gillette AFL Trade Period Review

In: Tom Hickey (Gold Coast), Tom Lee (Claremont), Trent Dennis-Lane (Sydney Swans), draft selections 25, 26, 41, 44
Out: Brendon Goddard (Essendon), Jamie Cripps (West Coast); Sam Crocker, Brett Peake, Dean Polo (delisted); Daniel Archer (delisted rookie); draft selections 12, 37, 57

Draft selections: 25, 26, 41, 44, 77, 95, 113, 131

What they need: The Saints have enough ruckmen and forwards for the immediate and the distant future so there is no need to add to that pile in the draft. West Coast's refusal to release Mitch Brown means the tall defensive stocks are still pretty thin and they will be looking to develop this area. Midfielders are also
likely to be targeted at the draft after Goddard's departure. It would seem that with Hickey, Dennis-Lane and Lee on board the Saints have addressed the need to recruit players in their early 20s and would most likely target teenagers.
