JACK Rush doesn’t have to think long to recall his most memorable moment as a St Kilda supporter.
Rush, a Queen’s Counsel and a lifelong St Kilda fan was at the MCG onGrand Final day, 1966 and says the exhiliration of occasion will staywith him until the day he dies.
“It’s very hard for me to go past the 1966 Grand Final when I was a15-year-old and I am looking forward to another dose of thatexcitement,” Rush told saints.com.au.
Not surprisingly, Rush’s St Kilda heroes came from that era but he has acquired a few favourites from the modern day as well.
“Darrel Baldock and Carl Ditterich who didn’t play that day remainwith me and Nicky Winmar was a great favourite along with Tony Lockett,”he said.
“It is very hard for me to go past our captain and spiritual leader of the team in the current generation (Nick Riewoldt).”
Rush is one of four new board members at the Saints and said heconsulted with members of the legal fraternity before agreeing to jointhe club.
“I have to confess I did. A good mate of mine is Peter Gordon who hastaken a big step this year (to run for president of the WesternBulldogs). I’m not sure whether I might be responsible for that when Isaid St Kilda is perhaps where I want to be,” he said.
“I did because I wanted to make sure I had the time and I had the background to ensure I had something to give to the board.”
Rush is known mainly for assisting the recent royal commission intothe 2009 Victorian bushfires but he has experience in the world offootball, having previously chaired the AFL Grievance Tribunal.
In a decorated career that also includes time with the RoyalAustralia Navy reserve and the presidency of elite Victorian AmateurFootball Association team Old Xaverians, Rush says he considers being apart of the St Kilda board as a real feather in his cap.
“When I was approached I gave it a fair bit of thought but I think itis a great honour to be asked to be on the board and I’m reallyimpressed with the way in which the club is heading,” he said.
“I think to be part of a team at a football club is always a greatexperience and we’ve got a great future at St Kilda so it is wonderfulto be a part of it and looking at the draft I think we’ve got the kidsto go further.”
And after the trade and draft period brought in eight new St Kilda players, Rush is optimistic about the year ahead.
“I think we’re always positive at the start of the season but I thinklooking at 2012 I can’t think of a game where the team didn’t put inand with that sort of commitment some of the closer games that we lostthis year we can win,” he said.
“I very much think we are in for a good year, a competitive year and I just want to see us playing finals.”
