AS GEELONG’s lead extended in the second half of Saturday night’s game, Jack Newnes remained focused on the job at hand.

The 20-year-old spent the majority of the game following dangerous Geelong forward Mathew Stokes, holding him scoreless despite the Cats avalanche of goals in the second half.

“I was playing half-back so I got to play on a few pretty good players which was a good experience,” Newnes told SAINTS.com.au.

At quarter time the contest was on even terms, before Geelong booted 17 goals to one to run away with the game.

“The first quarter was good,” he said. “I think we used the ball well, we didn’t allow them through the corridor which they used heavily in the second half.”

“It was probably the only positive out of the game but we just need to play the whole four [quarters].”

Despite coming up against the all-conquering Cats, Newnes said that he was still bitterly disappointed with the result.

“We don’t really want to have any excuses. We do have a younger side in but we just have to push through that.”

“I think we’ll just look mostly towards Brisbane … we really do need to bounce back after a tough gig tonight.”

Jack Newnes is averaging 15.1 disposals per game this season and has played 15 out of a possible 17 matches for the year.
