Blue Ribbon Day is when all Victorians have an opportunity to remember police officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
The Club has enjoyed a fantastic relationship with the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation with the Club, as well as the Hawthorn Football Club, battling for the annual Blue Ribbon Cup each year. The Blue Ribbon Cup was established in 1999 in memory of two Victoria Police officers Sergeant Gary Silk, a Hawthorn member and Senior Constable Rodney Miller, a Richmond supporter who were killed in the line of duty at Moorabbin in August 1998. The St Kilda Football Club supports the Blue Ribbon Cup as the officers lost their lives in the line of duty in Moorabbin.
The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation perpetuates the memory of members of the Victoria Police killed in the line of duty through the support of worthwhile community projects within Victoria, such as providing funding for new and improved emergency facilities in public hospitals named in memory of fallen officers. It's a program that remembers lives by saving others.
In total, 157 Victoria Police members have been killed in the line of duty. Of these, 30 have been murdered, which underlines the dangers police members face on a daily basis.
The Club is encouraging its supporters and members to participate in Blue Ribbon Day in a number of ways; from attending a Memorial Service in your community, to wearing a badge of Remembrance. Blue Ribbon Day merchandise is available through Police Stations, 7-Eleven stores, RACV Shops, Stockdale & Leggo Real Estate offices, E & S Trading stores, Bank of Melbourne branches and other selected outlets.
