ON May 11, 2009, St Kilda Football Club's online presence changed forever.

The Saints Facebook page, run out of a small office in Moorabbin, would change the way fans all over the world would interact with the club.

Just short of five years later, our page has just ticked over 100,000 likes.

Along the journey, other social networks have been introduced and embraced by the loyal supporters.

St Kilda's Instagram has 14,000 followers, while the Twitter account is just 500 people away from reaching 30,000 followers.

Initially, the Facebook page was used not just for news, photos and articles during the week, but also for goal-by-goal updates on game day. However the evolution of Twitter changed all this, and score-by-score stats and updates became a product of the Twittersphere, while Facebook was reserved for mid-week news and end of quarter scores.

Nowadays, the two mediums have almost meshed into one another. Facebook is primarily a news service with links to website content and information, while Twitter does the same job with the valuable addition of fan interaction.

Allowing supporters to Tweet in and ask questions or discuss topical issues makes for a welcoming forum, and it's no surprise that all AFL clubs have embraced Twitter in the past two years or so.

But Facebook is where it all began, and we'd like to thank YOU, our loyal fans, for helping us reach 100,000 likes.

Keep commenting, 'liking' and tweeting, because we read every post.

It's your involvement that makes us More than a Football Club.
