Sam Rowe has joined the St Kilda Football Club ahead of the Supplemental Selection Period deadline.

The former Carlton defender was added to the club’s list after Dylan Roberton today announced he would miss the 2019 season due to a heart condition.

General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean said the club selected Rowe to bolster its key position stocks.

“It was important for Dylan to have the time to make a decision that was right for he and his family,” Lethlean said.

“Once we were aware that he would be missing the season and moving onto the long-term injury list, we decided to bring Sam in.

“The reality of football is that we need to utilise the AFL rules to best prepare our list for the rigours and requirements of the competition, and Sam provides an important element heading into the season.

“He’s an experienced defender, who can also play forward if need be and pinch-hit in the ruck.

“He is also a quality person who knows what is required at the elite level.”

Lethlean said both Rowe and fellow SSP signing Jonathon Marsh would play important roles.

“Nathan Brown has been arguably our most impressive trainer this season and will be right to go in Round 2, while Darragh Joyce and Josh Battle are promising young defenders,” he said.

“Josh and Darragh were very impressive in key position roles in the JLT Series and Sam and Jonathon will provide important support for those guys.”
