AFLX is set to return in a revamped format in 2019, with four teams to be hand-picked from a pool of 100 players from around the competition.

And leading the charge for the Saints to feature in the one-night tournament is the club’s 2018 leading goal-kicker, Jade Gresham.

One team – captained by Adelaide’s Eddie Betts – will be an all-indigenous line-up, putting Gresham firmly in the mix alongside fellow indigenous excitement machine Ben Long.

The pair formed a potent combination through the midfield and in front of goal in 2018, but due to Long’s foot injury, shared outings were unfortunately few and far between.

But in the 2018 edition of AFLX, there was one Saint who stood out above the rest.

Rebound defender Shane Savage proved a deadly weapon on the smaller field, booting two long-range from behind halfway, each worth 10 points.

The New Zealand-born Saint will no doubt be in the frame for selection this year, with his rugby-centric upbringing also influential on the rectangle-shaped ground.

There will be a live draft to decide teams ahead of the AFLX tournament, which is locked in for Friday, 22 February at Marvel Stadium.

Despite which Saints feature in the AFLX tournament, the players’ focus will remain firmly on St Kilda’s first intra-club match of the summer, scheduled for Saturday, 23 February at RSEA Park.
