Head of Development and Learning Damian Carroll provides an update on the AFL-listed players that represented Sandringham against Southport on Saturday.
VFL MATCH CENTRE: Round 12 v Southport
SANDRINGHAM 1.1 2.2 4.4 6.9 (45)
SOUTHPORT 5.6 7.10 11.13 16.14 (110)
Hugh Boxshall
30 disposals, 12 tackles, eight clearances, five inside 50's
Won a lot of ball on the day after coming back into the side. We were happy with his effort and intent and continues to show his consistency at this level.
Darcy Wilson
32 disposals, five tackles, nine clearances
Had a strong game playing as an inside mid which is a role he hasn’t played much in his career to date. Found a lot of the footy and was able to prove damaging around clearances.
Hugo Garcia
24 disposals, 10 tackles, nine clearances, five inside 50s, one goal
Fought through a hard tag provided from the opposition to produce another solid game. He was able to use the ball really well which is something he’s been working on and showed his defensive presence with a high tackle count.
Arie Schoenmaker
28 disposals, six marks, five intercepts
Arie continued to show good intent around defending which is something he’s been working on through the first half of the year. He was also able to win a fair bit of the ball again through the backline.
Alix Tauru
16 disposals, 12 marks, 10 intercepts
One of our best performers on the day. He really got going and read the ball well in the air with eight intercept marks. He was able to find a lot of the footy through that and competed really well throughout.
Liam O'Connell
13 disposals, six marks, four tackles
Liam executed his role well after a few weeks away from games at any level. Saw some positive signs with his ball use and intent and continues to show his understanding of the game plan.
Harry Boyd
14 disposals, 20 hitouts, four score involvements
Was engaged in a strong ruck battle with Crossley of Southport who is the benchmark. We thought him and Max (Heath) were able to even out the battle and Harry showed his ability to give us first access and also give a strong contest in the forward line.
Max Heath
10 disposals, 13 hitouts, one goal
As with Harry (Boyd) he shared much of the ruck work and take some strong marks in the forward 50. Finished with a goal and gave himself plenty of opportunities with his competitiveness.
Liam Henry
11 disposals, five tackles, two tackles inside 50
Started as a forward and then moved into an inside mid role. Once he moved in there he was able to show a bit of class and we were happy with his defensive pressure around the contests.
James Barrat
Seven disposals, four marks
Competed strongly with a tough matchup on Hugh Dixon of Southport, limiting him to two goals. He’s continuing to focus on his aggression at the ball and the opposition when it’s his turn to go.
Patrick Said
Seven disposals, one goal
Showed his class early in the contest with a nice goal as a forward before moving up to the wing. He worked hard to execute his role on the day and is looking more comfortable at the level.
Angus McLennan
Five disposals, five intercepts
Played a strong defensive game within our system. He wasn’t as involved offensively as he would have liked but he’s been working hard to develop that.
Alex Dodson
Seven disposals, two intercepts
Played the majority of the game up forward with some spurts in the ruck through the game. We weren’t quite able to get the ball to him enough in the forward line but showed some signs in the aerial contests.
Jack Carroll
Eight disposals, two clearances
Had to back up the Thursday night game here which was a good effort. We’re working on developing his ability as a high half forward which is where we think he can impact at AFL level as well.
Lance Collard
Four disposals, three inside 50s
It was a frustrating day for Lance in terms of the supply but we thought his immediate pressure when the ball came to ground was strong throughout the day. He was able to get exposure on the ball late and showed some signs in there.
