Mattaes Phillipou is eyeing a return to face the Pies at Marvel Stadium this week as St Kilda continues to strengthen its squad.
The South Australian missed last week’s game after being subbed out early the week prior with a ruptured plantaris tendon. Pleasingly, Phillipou’s injury was at the minor end, but he will still be required to pass a fitness test during Thursday’s main session to put his hand up for selection.
Key forward Max King has sought further medical advice after experiencing discomfort in his knee during training late last week.
“It’s a very frustrating situation for Max, who has done everything possible to put his body in the best position to play this year,” EGM Football David Misson said.
“Our priority is Max’s long-term health and setting him up for a successful career here at the Saints, not rushing him back before he’s ready.
“Max and our medical team are currently obtaining additional expert opinions, which will help us make the most informed decisions heading into the back half of the season.
“Once we consolidate this information, we’ll be best placed to make a decision on what the next couple of months look like for Max.”
Paddy Dow is on the cusp of playing his first game of 2025 after a remarkable recovery from a serious knee infection, which resulted in multiple surgeries over the Christmas break. Dow will also need to pass a fitness test to be available for selection this week.
“What Paddy has managed to overcome over the past six months is a testament to him and the dedication of our medical and high performance staff who have assisted in his recovery,” Misson said.
“We can’t wait to see him get back to what he does best.”
Key defenders Dougal Howard and Zaine Cordy are both tracking well in their respective post-surgery rehab programs, with returns expected in the coming weeks.
